Vaccine critic Yehuda Shoenfeld elected member of Israel Academy

Yehuda Shoenfield is either a genius or a quack of autoimmunity research, depending on which side you stand in the antivax debate. He is also apparently a plagiarist, even Wikipedia is not safe. And this is why he is now a Member of Israel Academy of Sciences.

Yehuda Shoenfeld, the autoimmunity quack expert who loves associating with and taking money from the most notorious antivax characters, has been elected as member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The announcement was made on 16 June 2019, an official ceremony will take place in December during Chanukah, 2019. The reasons for this early Christmas present to antivaxxers around the world are unclear, but there is apparently big money and heavy networks involved.

Shoenfeld is portrayed as the godfather of autoimmunity research in Israel and beyond, because to him all diseases are caused by autoimmune reactions. Including autism, which according to Shoenfeld and his antivax friends is caused by inflammatory aluminium adjuvants in vaccines. For example, Professor Shoenfeld explained how aluminium in vaccines poisons people in a BMC Medicine video interview in 2013. The occasion was a paper in that journal which Shoenfeld coauthored and which contains fabricated data.

Smut Clyde, who as established expert in antivax quackery (see his earlier posts on the topic here and here), refused to read or watch the Shoenfeld interview in BMC Medicine because it would make his teeth hurt. Below, Smut Clyde will expose plagiarism in Shoenfeld’s autoimmunity papers and guide you through the freak show of antivax crackpots and child abusers, all connected to Shoenfeld. But before that, there will be a letter of protest sent to Israel Academy by an Israeli immunologist, so far ignored by its recipients.

Professor Shoenfeld used to be affiliated with Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel-Aviv University, where the 71-year-old is now emeritus. The Zabludowicz Center for Autoimmune Diseases at Sheba which Shoenfeld runs (or used to run) is funded by the Finnish-British billionaire Poju Zabludowicz, who also likes to donate to right-wing politicians, especially to Benjamin Netanjahu. Another source of cash for Shoenfeld’s academic activities is the notorious antivax entity, the so-called “Children’s Medical Safety Research Institute”, CMSRI.

Also because of the money flows, the Sheba hospital affiliation is said to be the source of Shoenfeld’s sway in Israeli politics and academia. For example, Dean of Sackler Ehud Grossman has a clinical affiliation with the Sheba Centre. Sources revealed it was influential Sheba clinicians who put forward Shoenfeld’s name for Academy membership, very likely Gidi Rechavi and Uri Seligsohn, plus a third bigwig from Tel Aviv University. Incidentally, just before Shoenfeld was put forward as Academy member, Sheba Medical Center advertised for his antivax rants, but had the press release and even its externally archived version purged in May 2019 (luckily, Shoenfeld’s paranoid antivax fans were quick to save screenshots and another copy in March 2019):

Top Israeli Doctor Points to Vaccines as Contributing to the Rising Rate of Autoimmune Diseases

[…] “Throughout our lifetime, the normal immune system walks a fine line between preserving normal immune reactions and developing autoimmune diseases,” says the article. “The healthy immune system is tolerant to self-antigens. When self-tolerance is disturbed, dysregulation of the immune system follows, resulting in the emergence of an autoimmune disease. Vaccination is one of the conditions that may disturb this homeostasis in susceptible individuals, resulting in autoimmune phenomena and ASIA.”

[…] Dr. Shoenfeld summarizes, “…many reports that describe post-vaccination autoimmunity strongly suggest that vaccines can indeed trigger autoimmunity. Defined autoimmune diseases that may occur following vaccinations include arthritis, lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE), diabetes mellitus, thrombocytopenia, vasculitis, dermatomyositis, Guillain-Barre syndrome and demyelinating disorders. And almost all types of vaccines have been reported to be associated with the onset of ASIA.”

During his academic career, Shoenfeld published almost 2000 papers, only 2 were retracted. In 2007 alone he churned out 110 papers, even in 2017, just before his 70th birthday, the emeritus blessed the world with 80 papers (Basically, a paper created each week, with a rest on Sabbath). It seems good old plagiarism was one of the decisive tools to boost Shoenfield’s publication output. Another was to put his name on the works of others. For example, why on Earth does an Israeli researcher who speaks no Russian, sport an affiliation with St Petersburg State University? Maybe because it is a win-win situation: his Russian colleagues used Shoenfeld’s celebrity to angle Megagrant funding in 2016 to study autoimmunity, while the Israeli emeritus gets a fresh new academic affiliation and authorship on more papers. It all counts when you suffer from an inflamed superego.

A protest letter, unanswered

A letter by an Israeli clinical immunology professor (whose identity will be protected for now) was sent on 16 June 2019 to Nili Cohen, a law scholar at Tel Aviv University and President of Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, cc-ed to Vice-President David Harel, computer scientist at Weizmann Institute and Past President Ruth Arnon, who is a Weizmann immunologist famous for the development of the multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone. This was the letter, so far unanswered:

“Dear Professor Cohen,
It came to my knowledge that Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld was elected as a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities. I received these news with dismay and amazement. I know Dr. Shoenfeld for about four decades as a person and I am intimately familiar with his “scientific” activity.

As a scientist, as an immunologist, as a physician, and as a senior member of the Faculty of Medicine, and Tel Aviv University, I would like to let you know that I view the nomination of Dr. Shoenfeld to the Israel Academy of Sciences as a grave error that will severely taint the reputation of the Academy in the eyes of real and honest scientists, who spent their lives in the service of in-depth investigation and truthful reporting of results.

I shall summarize briefly the reasons for my strongly felt objection to Dr. Shoenfeld’s nomination, while being aware of the fact that not being a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, I have no legal right to oppose this nomination.

  1. As an immunologist, aware of the true workings of the Shoenfeld laboratory, I know that all the work was performed by people other than Dr. Shoenfeld, who was never trained in the methodology of experimental work, the careful analysis of data, and the faithful and accurate reporting of results.
  2. Over the years, serious doubts were expressed about the reproducibility of work originating in Dr. Shoenfeld’s group. On one occasion, at least, a letter was sent to the authorities of Tel Aviv University, concerning irreproducibility of Dr. Shoenfeld’s work. Unfortunately, this letter was not signed, a fact that reflects the fear of whistle blowers from being penalized for their act.
  3. However, every reasonable investigator who ever worked in bio-medical research knows that no human being can publish 1939 papers, unless these reflect the work of hundreds of investigators, to which Dr. Shoenfeld’ true contribution is insignificant, or to put it in a more benevolent way, questionable (see official Clarivate record sent with this mail).
  4. To make these results more palpable, here are some simple calculations: In the year 2007, he has published 110 papers, which means 2.11 papers each week or 0.3 papers per day. In 2017, his productivity was reduced to 80 papers, meaning 1.54 papers each week or 0.21 papers per day. If there ever was a miracle worker, it is Dr. Shoenfeld.
  5. Dr. Shoenfeld also has a most impressive citation record: 58,116 citations (of which 8,704 are self-citations!). The members of the Israel Academy of Sciences should have had a good look at his three most cited papers (3158, 1739, and 1048 citations). These have 16, 32, and 24 authors, respectively, with Dr. Shoenfeld somewhere in the middle. All three are papers of consortia dealing with nomenclature or reviews of groups of patients. One would expect that a scientist’s most cited papers to be representative of his own best work. The rest of the 1939 papers is a potpourri of every field of medicine from tobacco smoke to vitamin D and inflammatory bowel disease, to mention only a minority.
  6. There is no area of medicine to which Dr. Shoenfeld has not seemingly,
contributed in writing, not to mention editorial duties in two journals, the authorship of books on a variety of subjects, the truly compulsive organization and chairing of tens of congresses, and a flourishing private practice. As a scientist, of some experience and standing, I can conclude that doing all this is incompatible with the performance of true scientific activity.

Nomination of Dr. Shoenfeld to the Israel Academy of Sciences will be interpreted by all those who truly care for Israeli biomedical research, for the fairness of rewards, and for having true role models for those who enter the wonderful world of scientific research, as a terrible mistake. It signifies that the Israel Academy of Sciences is impressed by self-promotion, “celeb” status, and biased and lacking in objectivity recommendations, and not by an objective system of values.”

ASIA is not the 1980s prog-rock super-band with Roger Dean album covers

By Smut Clyde

I first encountered Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld (author, serial founder of journals, and Conference Impresario) after the retraction of one of his papers for methodological insufficiency. He was not well-pleased, complaining of the damage to his other job as an Expert Witness who testifies for compensation-seeking ‘vaccine-damaged’ complainants. Indeed, towards Retraction Watch he seemed to be convinced that this testimonial moonlighting was what motivated the criticism and retraction:

Indeed it is [very] strange; after one year of being in the journal and after extensive peer reviews of the paper suddenly we received a letter from the editors that SOMEBODY criticized the paper extensively??, it looks very strange and unprecedented. yet indeed at this time we have used this paper in Court for vaccine compensation to show that autoantibodies penetrate cells. Is it coincidental ????????

In expert testimony to the US Court of Federal Claims, arguing that epidemiologists are all wrong and unexpected heart failure was probably caused by HPV vaccination, “Dr. Shoenfeld’s opinion was that the vaccination was still the reason for the death [by car accident] either because the reporter of information manipulated the data or because the vaccination impaired the person’s ability to operate a car.” Special Master Moran noted observed in a footnote:

“Dr. Shoenfeld appears to be developing a propensity for selective ad hominem attacks. When researchers such as Dr. Chao find no evidence that a vaccine is causing an increased incidence of disease, Dr. Shoenfeld attacks the integrity of the researcher. However, Dr. Shoenfeld readily accepts the reports of a vaccination preceding the onset of various diseases without considering the bias or prejudice of those reporters.”

A ‘Professor Schoenfeld’ gave evidence in the 1996-2003 £15m “MMR vaccine causes autism” litigation. For further expert-witnessing, I refer you to a post by blogger “Neurodiversity”. The context was a curious incident in 2006 when the journal Autoimmunity Reviews (Co-Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Y. Shoenfeld) commissioned an article from David and Mark Geier (struck-off medical malpractitioner) about their quack cure for autism (“mercury toxicity”) by chelation and chemical-castration drugs; published it; and then retracted it. Anxieties arose about conflicts of interest because so many editors and authors were testifying for a “vaccines cause autism” etiology in a US court case of the time, the Omnibus Autism Proceeding. Brian Deer, the investigative journalist who also exposed the Wakefield-Lancet antivax scandal, wrote more.

So Shoenfeld is identified with the anti-vaccine lobby, at least in the minds of anti-vaccine True Believers. His is the name most touted in tweets as proof that Real Science is on their side (with Drs Exley, Shaw, Gherardi and Luján as lesser authorities). I feel safe in predicting they will make the most of his induction into Israel’s Academy of Sciences as a vindication of everything they have said.

It was inevitable, then, that out of Shoenfeld’s oeuvre of 1986 papers and 161 book chapters, vaccine-themed publications would attract the most post-publication scrutiny (and the most retractions). Though to be fair, much of that oeuvre comprises literature reviews, and case-study compilations; and what is there to criticise about scouring the literature in search of confirmation for hypotheses? Thus much of the scrutiny that exists – appearing in discussion threads at the PubPeer forum – has targeted regrettable metaphors more than empirical contents.

As commented on PubPeer about Colafrancesco et al 2013:

“This Guest Editorial finishes:
“All these papers light the idea that unraveling the soul of autoimmune diseases is like playing chess, and with every discovery, we are adding new moves to the game. The pathogenesis, disease and treatment are the rook, bishop and knight pointing at checkmating ADs.”
So autoimmune diseases have a soul, which is evidently knitted, so it unravels. Which is like playing chess… where the disease is the bishop, allied with its pathogenesis (the rook), pitted against the treatment (the knight). This is not any form of chess I am familiar with, so it is just as well that “we are adding new moves to the game”.
At the same time it is a puzzle. To which new dowels are being added. That is where the metaphor lost me.”

Bonus bad metaphor:

Screenshot_2019-06-25 Vaccination in patients with chronic or autoimmune rheumatic diseases The ego, the id and the superego

But it may be that I am putting the tail before the dog, or letting the cart wag the horse, or something along those lines. Shoenfeld has also identified himself with the concept of autoimmunity, which he evangelises with prophetic, proselytic zeal, seeking to enshrine it as the heart of medical research and practice. As David Attenborough is to Nature, as Carl Sagan was to the Cosmos, so Shoenfeld is to Autoimmunity and he will not rest content until he hosts a six-part BBC documentary on the topic.

So there are autoimmunity textbooks (Ed. Shoenfeld) and scholarly journals (Ed. Shoenfeld), and the Venice Biennales of the field, the International Congresses on Autoimmunity.

Also, the Academy of [on-line] Autoimmunity. The advertising brings Multi-Level Marketing to mind, or Trump University (with its promises of an entrée to the closed, lucrative world of real-estate dealing), and seems to be aimed at a pool of would-be Autoimmunologists who are vaguely aware that the field exists and are keen to join it at the tier nearest to the top.

Frankly, the invitations to “join the Family” sound rather cult-like… I would worry about the indoctrination and the no-going-back initiation ceremonies, with the branding irons and the sacrifice. I was reassured to find that the main drawcards of the Autoimmunity Network (the Family in question) appear to be early access to the next Autoimmunity Congress and revised editions of Autoimmunity Textbooks, with advertisements for Autoimmunity Review and a side-link to Shoenfeld’s biography and CV.

It is undeniable, though, that this sprawling Empire of Autoimmunity is intimately entwined with antivax rhetoric. At the core of Shoenfeld’s 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th ICAs in Grenada, Nice, Lisbon and Leipzig, the nuclei they crystallised around, we find (respectively) the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th International Symposia on Vaccines, and these were very much antivax events.

I don’t know which is more revealing: the endorsement from Claire Dwoskin (who has devoted her life to the abolition of vaccines and funds the cause through her foundation CMSRI), thanking Shoenfeld and the Congress for their contributions to the anti-vaccine cause; or the decision to include her imprimatur in Congress advertising, as supportive of its brand:

“Thank you for all that you have done to help people, put on an excellent congress, and provide a forum for the vaccine and adjuvant issue.

Claire Dwoskin, USA

These International Congresses are Madrassahs, as it were, in the “Shoenfeld School” of Autoimmunity. I don’t want to go overboard about their role in radicalising antivaxxers but their founding father was happy to own that aspect:

Dear [redacted],
Thank you for your inquiry. Indeed, we are planning to hold the 4th International Symposium on Vaccines at the 10th International Congress on Autoimmunity. This symposium is an educational course that is supported by CMSRI, a research institute dealing with vaccine safety among other things. The program of the course is determined by the Congress Scientific Committee. In 2014 EACCME accredited the course for 3 credits. We will apply for accreditation also in 2016. Since the support does not come from a for-profit company of the pharma/medical device industry, rather from a non-profit research and patient-advocacy institution, ICA endorses the ISV as part of its official (pre-Congress) program.
You can read more about the 3rd International Symposium on Vaccines and CMSRI on these websites:
Best regards,
Anna [redacted]

Prof. Yehuda Shoenfeld, MD, FRCP
Head of the Zabludowicz Center for Autoimmune Diseases

Now another hat worn by Shoenfeld was as adviser and voucher for the “scientific and medical accuracy” of The Greater Good, a notoriously one-sided, mendacious piece of movie-shaped anti-vaccine propaganda, funded by Dwoskin. I mention this only because the movie’s promoters were so insistent that the International Congresses are primarily a vehicle for antivax agitation:

“First is that vaccine safety issues are reaching the mainstream in the scientific community and will feature once again at the 9th International Congress on Autoimmunity taking place this spring in Nice, France. Second is that a true hero in the area of vaccine safety awareness, Claire Dwoskin, of the Children’s Medical Safety Research Institute and also a donor to production of The Greater Good, will be honored at the conference with the prestigious AESKU award.

The congress was founded by the esteemed expert on autoimmunity, Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld, who is also recognized as having identified the new ASIA syndrome or autoimmune (autoinflammatory) syndrome induced by adjuvants. Specifically, Professor Shoenfeld and his team identified a spectrum of ailments peculiar to this new syndrome that resulted from the toxic insult of aluminum adjuvants and other toxins. Aspects of the syndrome are symptoms folks in the vaccine safety area know all too well: neurological/cognitive changes and impairment, gut problems, chronic fatigue and sleep problems, muscle weakness and pain, specific autoimmune diseases and much more.

This years’ congress will once again include hundreds of experts in their field presenting their research on over 80 autoimmunity topics to over 2,000 participants from all over the world and the congress will also feature the 3rd International Symposium on Vaccines.”

The programs of these symposia show them to be standard gatherings of the “Aluminati” – a familiar group of CMSRI-funded researchers into the hidden damage wreaked by aluminium adjuvants – with Keele University academic Chris Exley and Dwoskin as co-chairs and ring-masters. Readers who do not follow this stuff can be forgiven for not knowing these names (so see here). Most of the presentations are rehearsals for the biennial Keele Meetings on Aluminium (held each following year).

The 3rd Vaccine Symposium featured Stephanie Seneff banging on about the Pineal Gland and how vaccines prevent the opening of the Third Eye; and Lucija Tomljenovic, explaining that HPV vaccines are so lethal because of “A Trojan Horse Mechanism Delivery of Vaccine Antigen Particles to the Brain”. And in case you are not yet surfeited with people you’ve never heard of, I’ll just say that Sin Hang Lee was there to promote his unique, proprietorial form of PCR, which can find the fragments of viral DNA in HPV vaccines that all other tests overlook.

The 4th Vaccine Symposium was more of the same:

  • What role do vaccines play in inducing autoimmunity?
  • Are there safe vaccines for genetically prone subjects?
  • Can we vaccinate against autoimmune diseases?
  • What is the role of adjuvants and/or molecular mimicry in vaccines inducing autoimmune diseases?
  • Is it safe to vaccinate patients with autoimmune diseases?

Everything you wanted to know about vaccines and autoimmunity in one symposium.

The symposium is open for all Congress participants at no additional charge. No pre-registration required.

The liturgical displays of performative paranoia were enlivened on this occasion by the presence of Mark Geier, who has evidently traded in his old chemical-castration autism-cure scamming for new expertise as an autoimmunologist.

The 5th International Symposium on Vaccines (May 6th, 2018, in Lisbon) was perhaps the last to be sponsored by CMSRI (which is suddenly defunct). This time it was chaired by Exley and Romain Gherardi, and subtitled “Aluminium Adjuvants And Autoimmunity” for the benefit of anyone unsure of the overall message. No-one especially egregious featured in the program.

With this digression behind us, we can return to the nexus of autoimmunity and antivax enthusiasms, which attains a kind of apotheosis in ASIA. This is not the 1980s prog-rock super-band with Roger Dean album covers, but instead an expanse of Shoenfeld’s clinical territory, ‘Autoimmunity Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants’. “Adjuvants” is here interpreted in a liberal sense, to include the silicone fillings of breast implants and the less-palpable, perhaps metaphorical additives responsible for Sick Building Syndrome. Thus ASIA subsumes the etiological enigma of “Gulf War Syndrome”, by dint of a 2000 report that Gulf War anthrax vaccines contained squalene as an adjuvant (the manufacturers and the US military rejected this claim, and the evidence had long been refuted by the time Shoenfeld relayed it in 2009, 2011 and 2015).

ASIA is also known as “Shoenfeld’s Syndrome” in its author’s less modest moments. Other authorities tend to reject its validity, and even the coherence of the concept. There is much to be said for this new concept of defining syndromes not by their symptoms but by the purported cause: just by using the name, people have accepted your hypothesis.

Before ASIA, everything was the Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome (e.g. Hughes’ Syndrome) until proven otherwise. APS is a shape-shifting clinical entity with a thousand disguises, and caused by vaccines. Still, there are diagnostic restrictions on its scope (so it only accounts for about 300 of nearly 2000 papers), hence the expansion of the boundaries to Auto-Immunity in general.

We should return to ASIA, for it also stakes a claim to side-effects from the MMR vaccine (which contains no adjuvants or preservatives, being a live-virus product) and even from the oral polio vaccine (which is, by definition, not injected). It further subsumes the nebulous phenomenon of MMF, and by extension ME-CFS, which is just a manifestation of MMF with different diagnostic features (at least in France, according to an astroturf lobby-group speaking on behalf of those afflicted with ME-CFS). “MMF” is Macrophagal Myofasciitis: a condition designed to use up all the ‘i’s left surplus when ‘aluminium’ is telescoped into the barbarous form ‘aluminum’. It is rarely reported outside of France, and outside the circle of colleagues who have been trained to recognise it.

ASIA made its debut in 2011, and received its definitive description in a 2015 volume (sponsored by CMSRI). The groundwork, though, was laid in a 2009 Special Issue of Lupus, with Shoenfeld as co-author of 13 of the 18 papers. Of these, “Adjuvants and autoimmunity” is one of the foundational documents for the genre: it reappeared in extended form as “Role of Adjuvants in Injection and Autoimmunity” in the 2015 compendium. Large sections of text had previously appeared in an uncredited Wikipedia entry and as the Abstracts and summaries of other researchers.

“Similarity Texter” has a nice Bridget Riley pastel palette [h/t Debora Weber-Wulff]

Moving on, enquiring minds want to know the evidence for the report that the Hep-B vaccine “is the second most common vaccine reported to the USA Vaccine Adverse Events Report System”. Searches for a source lead only to other authors quoting that claim as a fact. Professor Shoenfeld has not responded to comments at PubPeer, on this and other topics.

Considering his “propensity for selective ad hominem attacks”, and his response to the queries from “Neurodiversity”, perhaps this is for the best.

“Dear Rolf,
This issue between the lady and the Geiers is an emotional vendetta and not a scientific issue. The paper was not published in our journal!! We do not need any report to anybody except the authors why their paper was not published. I am aware of this lady “disease” also in other aspects and domains. She writes to all the world and it arrived to at a stage of nuisance. We have decided not to respond to any of her emails letters etc.”

As reminder, you have been reading about the new Member of Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Update 13.04.2021

Guess who was appointed the new president of the Israeli Ariel University, located on the occupied territories, which I wrote about before (here and here)? They must read my site as inspiration there.

Yehuda Shoenfeld.

Shoenfeld, who will start as Ariel President in June, was quoted in a newspaper:

I came to Ariel University and saw the sparkle in my eyes. It is our job to develop the university into scientific research excellence and regional partnership and peace

“the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th International Symposia on Vaccines, and these were very much antivax events.”

I don’t think there was ever a First International Symposium on Vaccines. Instead there was the 2011 “Vaccine Safety Conference”, the “Junket in Jamaica”, when Claire Dwoskin invited and sponsored various like-minded scientists to spend a week at a high-end Jamaican resort, exchanging ideas such as “Rethinking the germ theory” and enjoying the company of notorious medical fraudster Andrew Wakefield via a Skype call.

Evidently the idea-sharing was enough of a success that they agreed to repeat it. Hence the group I like to call the Aluminati, or the Aluminions, who meet to enjoy CMSRI hospitality at the Vaccine Symposia on even-numbered years and the Keele Aluminium Meetings on odd-numbered years (while reviewing and publishing one another’s manuscripts in the meantime). Shoenfeld found that it made sense to organise his Autoimmunity Congresses around the even-year events, but he assures us that he is not anti-vaccine (just pro-safe vaccines), and Brutus is an honourable man.

Sylvie Coyaud noted two years ago:

    2 volte in rassegne

“Two thirds of the 1,300 articles by Shoenfeld et al. are reviews and ” policy papers “: those with the highest number of citations. Of the reviews – 697 , of which 50 in 2005 alone … – a dozen concern auto-immune diseases that vaccines can induce, but not their efficacy or safety with respect to other interventions or none (1).

Pino D’Agostino could not choose a hero more suitable for 22 steps.

“‘ ASIA ‘ – autoimmune / inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants ” is the paper by Shoenfeld et al. on alleged damage caused by vaccine adjuvants with the highest number of citations from Scholar: 403. But in articles – peer-reviewed or not – indexed by PubMeb are 57 . Without the self-citations, the “case studies” of ladies with silicon implants and two correlations to be investigated, 50 cast doubt on the existence and definition of a ” Shoenfeld syndrome ” (2). To see it for now, I am only Shoenfeld et al., Based on correlations observed in three clinical cases , recycled into more and more doubtful articles.

The second most cited (280 from Scholar) is 18 times in articles indexed by PubMed:

5 times to refute the theses
4 times about correlations to monitor and investigate
    2 times in reviews
6 times in garbage magazines of which 4 times on the one preferred by the Finelli-Tarantino band.

The two articles by Shoenfeld et al. on the papillomavirus vaccine , which had to prove aluminum damage – amenorrhea and behavioral disorders – at least in mice, they were retracted last year, after the “scientific community” had reported falsifications and conflicts of interest not declared (3). One was recycled as such in a magazine … directed by Shoenfeld.”

  3. Apparently the only concern Israeli academics and media had about Shoenfeld Academy membership is that he is not a lady.

“Academy Director Galia Pinzi said that she is aware of the “distressing” lack of women in the organization’s ranks, and that the selection of Academy members is made on the basis of excellence in research alone. “The number of women among Academy members reveals the lack of representation of women among in senior academic staff in institutions of higher education in Israel,” she said. “

    • It gets weirder. I received an email from a Belgrade (Serbia)-based Search-Engine-Optimiser (SEO) Pavel Kuharik, working for the Israeli company i-Logic. According to its website, the company provides services to Sheba Medical Center. This was the message:

My name is Pavel and I am a PR representative of Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer.
Thank you for mentioning our hospital in your informative article about our esteemed researcher, Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld, M.D, FRCP and for informing your readers about his study of vaccines and the side effects that come with them. 6. Leonid, thank you for citing to my work, and for shining a spotlight on Shoenfeld. Not only is he not a lady, he’s an unimaginative sexist who, after failing to address the many substantive questions I posed in my letter to Autoimmunity Reviews, resorted to the age-old ploy of characterizing a female critic as overemotional to the point of being mentally ill. Fortunately, enough members of the Editorial Board (including Nobel laureate Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel, to whom the email you quoted was addressed) were persuaded that serious ethical concerns existed with the Geiers’ research, and with Shoenfeld’s role in publishing it, that the paper was withdrawn, albeit with no explanation for their rationale.

Why in the world would the academy elect an anti-science crackpot like Shoenfeld? It drags down the reputation of their organization.

In related news, a group of people have set up a Systematic Review of aluminium-based vaccine adjuvants under the aegis of the Cochrane Fellowship, citing one of Shoenfeld’s papers as part of the rationale for bothering with a review. They concede that the paper in question (Inbar &c 2016) was retracted for shite methodology, but argue that editors at another journal thought the paper was not shite because they republished it. What the reviewers don’t say is that the topic editor at the re-publication journal – in charge of deciding “Shite or Non-Shite?” – was one Y. Shoenfeld.

  10. Apparently Shoenfeld is using his position as editor-in-chief the Israel Medical Association journal, to publish antivaxx promotional content.

This is a translation of a recent Facebook post by the Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians:

The Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians condemns the severe failure of judgment by Prof. Scheinfeld the Editor-in-Chief of “HaRefua” (“Medicine”) as expressed in the distorted publication in the journal last volume.

The editor-in-chief failed to fulfill his duty and acted unethically in allowing criminologists, ignorant in the field of vaccination, according to their own words, to write a distorted and biased criticism of a pseudoscience book written by anonymous authors and which directly endangers the Israeli public’s health.

The editor-in-chief allowed it all, without involving editorial board members with relevant professional expertise in this field, such as Prof. Shmuel Rishpon, physician expert in public health and chair of the Infectious Disease and Vaccine Advisory Committee.

We call for an urgent reassessment  in “HaRefua” journal and for the immediate dismissal of prof. Shoenfeld from his role in the journal, in light of his behaviour, as the flag bearer of the anti-vaxxers, and not for the first time.

This conduct brings to mind no other than the fabrication of the MMR study, by the British corrupt doctor Andrew Wakefield ,more than 20 years ago.

The tremendous damage to public health, in the form of recurrence of deadly diseases that we have thought to be a thing of the past, thanks to vaccines, damage those diseases caused in the past might occur again now, “thanks” to  Prof. Shoenfeld’s actions, is beyond comprehension and gratuitous.

Upon this opportunity, it should be noted that vaccines are at the forefront of modern preventative medicine, which for decades has been the foremost tool in preventing mortality and severe infectious disease at any age, with a significant contribution to the considarble increase in life expectancy and quality.

    • Sounds like it could be characterised as Shoenfeld uses his positions to publish and publicise Shoenfeld material, which includes antivax material within it, regardless of the effects it might have.

    • Smut Clyde

Shoenfeld uses his editorial position at Immunologic Research to publish the Proceedings of his biennial “International Congresses on Autoimmunity” as Special Issues. Naturally a lot of Congress presentations are devoted to ‘ASIA’ (a.k.a. “Shoenfeld’s Syndrome”, according to more sycophantic authors), and naturally they found their way into publication… “Hawkes et al. point out that the journal Immunological Research published 17 out of the 95 ASIA articles they found.”

It can be quite hard to find the Programs for these meetings, because they are too low-rent / predatory for the organisers to bother archiving anything, but the Wayback Machine helps:

      Click to access FinalScientificProgram_20120411%20PRINT%20file.pdf

This pukefunnel process is how many of the classic antivax fabrications like Shaw & Tomljenovic (2013) became part of the literature: they began as presentations at the “Vaccines & Autoimmunity Symposia” around which these Congresses were organised, so they were rubber-stamped into the journal, and there is little prospect of retraction no matter how mendacious they may be.

Let me recommend this good post by Prof. Dorit Reiss:
      She cites Hawkes et al…
“Of those 95 [publications], 32 (34%) have had Shoenfeld as a co-author, 59 (62%) in journals of which Shoenfeld is either the Editor in Chief or on the editorial board, and 56 (59%) were papers with authors who had co- authors published papers with Shoenfeld within the previous three years with an additional 5 (5%) papers published by member of the CMSRI Scientific Advisory Board (see Funding section). In fact there are only 14 (15%) papers on ASIA which do not fit into any of the groupings above linked to Shoenfeld.”

    • Loud & nasty never trumps the truth. Dr Schonfeld is blessed with the admirable ability to courageously & tenaciously share & publish the absolute truth. He is aligned with truth, with genuine health, & with the Almighty Creator. Those aligned with the vaccine mafia – including those who idiotically allow themselves & their loved ones to be blindly injected with abject filth because they “believe” the corrupt Nazi-science of vaccines are already miserable – but you ain’t seen nothing yet – Divine payback is coming!

Nice try trying to discredit Shoenfeld.
He is one of the few scientists who are trying to shed light on the harms that vaccines cause in susceptible people.
The public is on to the corruption and fraud of the drug manufactures. The gig is up.

At least we agree that Shoenfeld is very much in a minority, though my personal suspicion is that this is because he’s enormously wrong about everything.

  14. Pardon my French but do you seriously think having a bunch of plastic instead of titties, can’t cause some immune activation?
i am not speaking about Shoenfeld precisely because I dont follow him close enough but I think it’s not secret that exposure to silica can cause auotimmunity.
    ASIA doesn’t cover only vaccinations.

Also, many doctors who say vaccine might be triggering event waking up autoimmunity in minority of predisposed inidivudals, are not against vaccination in general.

  16. Unfortunately this article is very biased and not really for the betterment of science. I never had a problem with vaccinations, but unfortunately I made the uniformed mistake to get an FSME vaccinations on 13 December 2019. On the 25th of December I got sick and early January I started walking with difficulty. End of January I lost the use of my hands and legs due to an autoimmune reaction. I found his book and in chapter 19 is exactly what happened to me. Some doctors agree and some other make if I am crazy. Today I still have no official answer from any neurologist, but they have idea what could have caused it. I am in the German medical system and have had everything tested. The doctors mostly don’t take the vaccination in consideration, though there are sources that link GBS to the meningitis vaccination
